Trove Tuesday – Christmas Eve

It would be interesting to compare these 1914 numbers  with today’s.

1914 ‘Hornsby.’, The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate (Parramatta, NSW : 1888 – 1950), 3 January, p. 8. , viewed 04 Dec 2016, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article85960310

Trove Tuesday – A Busy Coroner

For our Trove Tuesday post this week we are looking at a newspaper report from 1929.

1929 ‘Hornsby Inquest.’, The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate (Parramatta, NSW : 1888 – 1950), 25 February, p. 5, viewed 16 February, 2016, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article104726566

Let’s look at Donald, one of the Hornsby People.

Another article found on Trove (1929 ‘EMPLOYEE ELECTROCUTED.’, Barrier Miner (Broken Hill, NSW : 1888 – 1954), 6 February, p. 1, viewed 16 February, 2016, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article46049859) confirms that Donald died on February 6.

A search of the NSW BDM Registry Indexes indicates that Donald’s death was registered at Ryde and that his parents were  Maurice W and Mary J.

Donald’s birth does not appear to have been registered in New South Wales. The Coroner’s report on Ancestry indicates that Donald was born in Devenport, (sic) New Zealand (Ancestry.com. New South Wales, Australia, Registers of Coroners’ Inquests, 1821-1937 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc.).

Further sleuthing on Ancestry indicates that Donald was born in the fourth quarter of 1899 (Ancestry.com. New Zealand, Birth Index, 1840-1950 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2014.).

The Index to Estate Files on Ancestry (Ancestry.com. New South Wales, Australia, Index to Deceased Estate Files, 1923-1958 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2013.) tells me more about Donald. He was a Radio Mechanic who lived in Carlingford and the administrator of his estate was Wilhelmina H Bowles.

It is highly likely that Wilhelmina was Donald’s wife as there is a  marriage of Donald Frank Bowles and Wilhelmina Helen Ross registered in Queensland on 4 December, 1922.

It appears that another Trove user is interested in Donald Frank Bowles as a search for that phrase returned 13 articles that had been tagged with the phrase “Donald Frank Bowles”. Perusal of these articles gives more information on Donald, his family and the tragedy.
