A Presence on Facebook

At our March Meeting members supported my proposal to set up a Facebook page for our group,  thanks to Sharn who volunteered to administer the page with me.

I suggested that the functions of the page might be

  • as a tool for marketing the Group
  • to promote Group events and services
  • as an information and education resource for Group members and the community
  • as a means of providing spontaneous communication with Group members and the community

The page has been live at https://www.facebook.com/hornsbysfhg for a few weeks now. Already several groups, individuals and institutions have liked (followed) our page and in time more will find the page and hear of our activities. I have also been posting to the page, on an ad hoc basis, links to items of interest to family historians. If you are on Facebook (I read this week that there are 12 million Australian Facebook accounts) then please “Like” our page and the links we share will appear among your posts. If you are not a Facebook member then you can visit the page every now and then to see what has been shared.

In case you are wondering about the use of Facebook for family history please take a look at a resource produced by one of my genimates in the US, Katherine Willson. You can download  her free 158 page PDF file containing 5,100+ links to Genealogy pages on Facebook from here, there are links to genealogy pages for many countries from Afganisthan to Zimbabwe.

I have submitted our Facebook page to Katherine for inclusion in her next update.
